Pillar 01 — Stabilize

Matrescence Made Clear

by Amy P. Fletcher

Becoming a mother is not a crash. It's a becoming. Matrescence, the developmental transformation into motherhood, was named in 1973 and still isn't a household word. This guide gives it a full framework, the six-stage Matrescence Stage Map, from Anticipation through Flourishing, for every woman standing at this threshold not yet knowing that what she's living through has a name.

Who this is for

New mothers at any stage of the transition into motherhood, pregnant or early in an adoption or surrogacy timeline through years postpartum, who want a real framework for a transformation nobody named for them.

About This Book

In 1973, medical anthropologist Dana Raphael coined the word "matrescence." Columbia clinical psychologist Aurélie Athan rediscovered and researched it decades later. Cambridge Dictionary didn't add the word until May 2022. Matrescence Made Clear, by Amy P. Fletcher, gives this fifty-year-overdue framework its full expression: the six-stage Matrescence Stage Map (Anticipation, Disruption, Disorientation, Integration, Expansion, Flourishing), mapped as a spiral rather than a staircase, alongside built-in tools including the Grief of Former Self Protocol, the Nervous System Reset Toolkit, the Fourth Trimester Planner, and the Daily Stability Check-In. Volume One of two; the companion volume, Matrescence in Relationship, is written for partners and the professionals supporting new mothers.

Framework position

A Strong Through Change original, part of the Stabilize pillar. Volume One of two; companion to the forthcoming Matrescence in Relationship.

About the Author

Amy P. Fletcher

Amy P. Fletcher wrote Matrescence Made Clear to close a fifty-year gap in the public conversation about motherhood, drawing on the research of Dana Raphael, Aurélie Athan, and Alexandra Sacks to give new mothers a genuine framework for what they're living through, not a diagnosis, and not a reason to feel grateful and hurry up. Her aim was a book that earns its keep by looking used, written in, dog-eared, kept by the bed rather than read once and shelved.
